Context: The first affair is serenity. The agitation has to end. The itchy irritability, the restlessness, the wanting. And so do the lows, the cocky-loathing, wretched, heavy-hearted, lead-gutted, teary-eyed, dry-mouthed misery. The pain. So practice the highs. The broad-eyed, bilious highs, the cheek-chewing, problem-brewing highs, the never-stopping-till-I-touch-the-sky highs, the up-at-dawn hitting-the-pipe highs, chasing, defacing, eye-racing highs, gagging, shagging, blagging highs. All the things we do to change the style nosotros feel, the fashion the globe looks and tastes: It'due south all got to get. So backbone is necessary. Courage to change yourself, the one thing you can change. Your mental attitude and actions. Neither the serenity nor the courage are bachelor to you on your own; if they were, y'all would've found them by now—you've been pretty fastidious in your research. God, all the same you lot conceptualize him, volition have to grant them to y'all. And whatever you conceptualize God as, with your human heed, your individual brain, made up of instinctive responses, training, and memories, however you conceptualize a ability that'south across y'all and the decisions you lot've made so far, your conception will be extremely limited. Likely as express equally my cat's conception of the Internet. The invisible network of interconnected portals that communicate data are beyond my true cat'south comprehension. My cat's inability to comprehend does not impede the Internet. The Www (which is incidentally quicker to say than "double-you lot, double-you, double-you lot-dot") will go along to exist, regardless of my cat's awareness. Pray, and then, for wisdom, wisdom to know the deviation between things we can modify and things we can't. Likely this will exist a lifetime's work, undertaken one solar day at a time. Which, for humans, is the way time happens. I don't have to live the 25th of May 2022 yet. I might never have to. I only have to live in this moment. That'southward why meditation comes in handy, and practicing it equally a community has benefits too. How are we to achieve existent change, conditions in which practices that lead to a dissimilar type of consciousness can plausibly exist pursued?
„God, give the states grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot exist changed,
backbone to change the things
which should be changed,
and the wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other. Living i twenty-four hour period at a time,
Enjoying i moment at a fourth dimension,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, every bit Jesus did,
This sinful world equally it is,
Not every bit I would accept it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your volition,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Amen."

„There are some things people can exercise to alter and some things they cannot practice — character can exist formed, but temperament is given. And the stiff who cannot bend are but as much to be pitied as the weak who cannot stiffen."

"Confusing 'Character' with 'Temperament'"
Clearing the Ground (1986)
Context: The core in the mystery of what we call personality resides in the individual mix between grapheme and temperament. The nigh successful personalities are those who achieve the best residuum between the strict demands of character and the lenient tolerance of temperament. This residual is the supreme test of genuine leadership, separating the savior from the fanatic.
The human Jesus is, to my heed, the ultimate paradigm of such psychic equilibrium. He was admittedly hard on himself and absolutely tender toward others. He maintained the highest criteria of conduct for himself just was not priggish or censorious or cocky-righteous about those who were weaker and frailer. Most persons of forcefulness cannot accept or tolerate weakness in others. They are blind to the virtues they exercise not possess themselves and are fiercely judgmental on 1 calibration of values lonely. Jesus was unique, even among religious leaders, in combining the utmost of principle with the utmost of pity for those unable to encounter his standards.
We need to empathise temperament better than nosotros exercise and to recognize its symbiotic relationship to grapheme. There are some things people tin do to change and some things they cannot do — character can be formed, but temperament is given. And the strong who cannot bend are just as much to exist pitied as the weak who cannot stiffen.
